Dear Students,
I am writing to provide a brief overview of your rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the federal law that governs access to and release of student education records.
Under FERPA, you have the right to:
- Inspect and review your education record by contacting the Office of the Registrar or the office that maintains the record.
- Request an amendment if you believe your record is inaccurate or misleading. Submit a statement to UnivRegistrar@georgetown.edu identifying the part you want changed and why.
- Control disclosure of personally identifiable information, except when FERPA allows disclosure without your consent, such as to University officials with a legitimate educational interest.
- File a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education if you believe FERPA requirements have not been followed.
Directory Information
Although Georgetown generally does not release student record information without your written consent, FERPA allows certain exceptions. One such exception is the release of directory information, which the University may disclose without your consent. Directory information includes: name, contact information, date of birth, parents’ names, major, enrollment dates, expected graduation, degrees and awards, prior institutions, participation in activities and sports, and athletes’ weight/height.
If you wish to withhold directory information, complete a “Request for Non-Disclosure of Directory Information” form available from the Office of the Registrar. Note:
- A FERPA “No Release” or “FERPA Flag” prevents sharing all directory information, even with parents, friends, employers, or honor societies.
- It cannot be applied selectively to individual pieces of information.
For full details on your FERPA rights and University policies, see the Office of the Registrar website or contact the Office of the Registrar directly.
Sincerely,
Annamarie Bianco
Associate Vice President and University Registrar
