Answers To FAQ's

How do I craft a Banner password?

Although your Banner username will be the same as your NetID, your Banner password must be different than you NetID password.  You will be provided a temporary password at training, and will then need to create a permanent one.  Banner requires a strong password - it must be at least 8 characters in length and contain:

  • at least one number
  • one uppercase letter
  • one lowercase letter
  • one special character !%*+-:?_

Please note:  the following special characters are NOT allowed by Banner &$"#()'`/;<>,=

Connect to your VPN (Georgetown SafeConnect or Cisco VPN).
Open a recommended web browser and navigate to https://inb.uis.georgetown.edu:4444/.
Log in using your Banner username and password.

The first time you connect to Banner you may be prompted to download the Oracle JInitiator plugin.  Since this is needed to connect to Banner please complete this process.

Note: Certain plug-ins, in particular Google, Yahoo, or other toolbars, can cause problems connecting to Banner.  It is recommended that you do not install these plug-ins on your computer.

Banner Cognos users with a Mac can use the Cisco VPN and Firefox or Safari to access the reporting environment.  However, there are some features of Cognos that require Windows.  It is recommended that Mac users who need to use these features use a Windows emulation program (such as VMware Fusion) on their computer.  The UIS Help Desk can provide more information and can facilitate the set up of this configuration after the vmware license has been purchased.

What is Banner?

Banner is the student information system and replaced SIS+ (as well as Student Access+ and portions of Faculty Access+).  Banner provides stable support for managing student academic information, student account data, Graduate Admissions, and finanacial aid information.

There are three components to Banner:

Banner INB:   This is Georgetown University's student information system that replaced SIS+.  It provides a web-based interface for Administrators to complete tasks.
Banner Cognos:  This is Georgetown University's enterprise reporting environment for Administrators who need to view student information.   Banner Cognos enables users to view reports of information from the student database (Banner INB).
Banner Self Service / MyAccess:  This is the secure web application that students and faculty members use to view their information from the new student information system.  MyAccess replaced Student Access+ and portions of Faculty Access+.  Review the Banner Self Service / MyAccess FAQ for more information.

How do I know if I need access to a component of Banner?

Banner INB:   Access to Banner INB is granted based on your role.  If you insert any student information (financial aid, transfer credits, charges, biographical information, etc) you likely need to work with the Banner INB system. The clearest indication of your need to view or update information in Banner INB is if you viewed or updated information in SIS+.
Banner Cognos:  Access to Banner Cognos is granted based on your role.  The clearest indication of your need to view reports of student data is if you are a Departmental Administrator, Department Head, Office Manager, or Department Chair.

Banner Self Service / MyAccess:  All teaching faculty, Advisors, and Deans will use Banner Self Service / MyAccess.  No additional steps are needed to obtain access - just go to http://myaccess.georgetown.edu and log in with your NetID and password.

If you believe you need access to Banner INB or Banner Cognos, please contact the appropriate Data Stewardfor confirmation and approval:
