Scheduling Guidelines

In reviewing your current slate of courses and these scheduling guidelines, please pay close attention to the number of Friday classes you have and to the distribution of classes during the day. Please also review the length of your lecture classes. They should meet fifty minutes per credit per week. Normal class hours for daytime programs are M-F 8:15AM to 6:05PM.

  1. Use the same distribution of class times as used in the model term (fall-fall; spring-spring; summer-summer). Exception: departmental allocations should be adjusted to conform to the Main Campus Scheduling Guidelines. Please consult with the registrar before scheduling more courses during peak hours. Use the Course Count by Meeting Time form to determine the number of courses you had at each time last year.

  2. In general, undergraduate and graduate lecture courses are to meet for fifty minutes per credit per week. Seminars may meet for one hundred minutes per week and still grant three credits. Two lab hours count for one credit.

  3. Time and day patterns are as follows:
    • Three meetings per week:
MWF, MTR, TRF for fifty minutes beginning at quarter past the hour.
    • Twice per week:
      MW, MF, WF, TR for seventy-five minutes beginning at 8:50, 10:15, 11:40, 1:15, 2:40, 4:15, 5:40 OR 6:15, and 7:40. Courses may also be scheduled from 7:30-8:45AM.
    • Once per week:
Any day of the week for one meeting except that classes meeting on Mondays should schedule one extra meeting at the regularly scheduled time and room on the first Study Day. Friday is recommended as an option for scheduling one day per week classes. Daytime seminars should start at quarter past any hour and run for one-hundred minutes. Hundred minute evening classes should meet at 6:00 - 7:40 or 7:50 - 9:30PM. Corses meeting for one-hundred fifty minutes once per week should be scheduled with a corresponding course on the matching day (M 1:15-3:55 & W 1:15 - 3:55) and start at the times for seventy-five minute classes.

  4. General Guidelines
    • Departments should schedule at least 10% of their classes on each day of the week (Monday - Friday).
    • Departments should schedule no more than 20% of their classes at any one hour for daytime classes (8:15AM - 6:05PM). Departments are encouraged to schedule at least 5% of their classes to start at 8:15AM or 8:50AM.
